Ros An Mhil Port Extension

GDG support Ros An Mhil Port Extension.

The port engineering team at GDG was delighted to hear the announcements last week that Irish Government is supporting the development of a deep water quay at Ros An Mhil Fishery Harbour Centre.

The state has committed to a €25 million capital upgrade plan to support the development of additional infrastructure which will expand the capabilities of the port.

Ros An Mhil is a state owned/operated harbour located on the Atlantic Ocean on the West coast of Ireland.

GDG has worked with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) for the past four years to develop the conceptual engineering of the Ros An Mhil deep water facilities. The role of GDG to date has included the optioneering and concept development of a new deep water facility, which will include the construction of an extra 200m of quayside capable of taking significantly larger vessels than can be accommodated in the existing port.

GDG’s role to date has included concept development of the infrastructure, analysis of the wave climate and loading conditions and associated ship navigation simulations, optimisation of dredge volumes, and general development of an efficient conceptual design for the deep water infrastructure.

Ros An Mhil also presents an opportunity for the emerging offshore wind sector in the Atlantic, with floating offshore wind representing the largest single opportunity for securing our energy future. With the lack of port infrastructure recognised to be a national infrastructure challenge impacting the deliverability of offshore wind, Ros An Mhil has the potential to contribute directly to the construction, installation and/or operations of offshore wind farms.

The development of the port capabilities will attract additional vessel activity and therefore will create local employment in rural Ireland. GDG look forward to the next phase, with this project being advanced into the detailed design stage and subsequently moving on to construction in the near future.

The commitment from government on the investment needed to see these designs realised is a welcome announcement which gives significance to the engineering we have done to date.

GDG is looking forward to the next phase ahead and the benefits that the deep water berth will bring to the communities on the West Coast of Ireland.
