Offshore Research Engineer

Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) has experienced a significant increase in our Offshore sector in recent years, particularly commercial activities for offshore wind projects, as well as R&D activities for the wave and tidal energy sector. In addition to GDG’s involvement in a large number of commercial offshore wind projects, GDG is participating in an EU-funded research project to develop a streamlined commercialisation pathway for wave and tidal energy development in Ireland and Wales. Specifically, GDG will develop a foundation and mooring design methodology and associated design tools for wave and tidal energy devices that will subsequently be applied to two pilot demonstration projects.
To address the workload associated with this project, as well as other offshore renewable energy projects, we are currently looking for an Offshore Research Engineer to support these activities. This role will report to our Head of Offshore and will be preferably based at our Cork office but there is also an option to be based at our Dublin office.
Role Description:
As an Offshore Research Engineer, you will primarily be office-based, developing efficient foundation and mooring design solutions for wave and tidal energy devices. This will involve numerical modelling, developing bespoke design software tools and validation of the design methodologies and associated tools against tank test results, as well as demonstration of these methodologies and tools for two pilot demonstration projects. In addition to the technical project activities, the role will involve project management duties, engagement with potential clients and stakeholders, as well as progress reporting and presentation of the project outcomes at meetings and conferences.
Expertise Required:
GDG is looking for a suitable candidate with prior research experience in relation to offshore renewable energy substructures. The ideal candidate will hold a technical background within civil or mechanical engineering, preferably having completed a PhD, but candidates who have completed a Masters in a relevant engineering subject will also be considered.
In addition, the ideal candidate shall have:
  • Experience in hydrodynamics modelling, Finite Element modelling, computer programming (Matlab, Python, C++, etc.) and GIS software packages (e.g. ArcGIS);
  • Demonstrated familiarity with design standards and guidance for offshore substructures;
  • A good understanding of geotechnical and structural engineering, including soil-structure interaction;
  • Experience in effective project management;
  • A demonstrated ability in technical report writing, preferably with a number of scientific publications;

Structural Engineer (5+ years’ experience)
This role will support our Urban Construction, Onshore Civil and Marine Civil Engineering design activities. This role will report to our Head of Structures and will be based at one of our Irish or UK offices (Dublin, Cork or Belfast). The location is flexible.
Role Description:
Your role will be predominantly office-based and will involve leading projects and working on analysis and design activities and supervising project and graduate engineers. Our order book has a healthy balance of marine structures, onshore wind infrastructure, water infrastructure, rail inspections and general foundation design for clients. Many of these projects are carried out as D&B designs for top-tier contractors.
You will be responsible for carrying out or reviewing structural designs, specifications, and the preparation of RC detailing packages. This will include leading teams in the areas of structural design and production of design reports.  The role will also involve structural inspections in the rail environment and property condition surveys as the need arises.

Senior CAD Technician (Dublin)

We are currently looking for a suitable candidate to fill the role of a Senior CAD technician in our Dublin office. The ideal applicant should have an extensive background in Civil / Structural technical roles with experience ranging from 5-10years.

The role of the candidate will entail supporting a team of Design Engineers delivering technical drawings and analysis to a wide range of clients, including developers, contractors and other consultancies. The role will also include maintaining/improving company standards and workflows.

The ideal candidate will be fully proficient in AutoCAD and have some Civil 3D & Revit experience, Knowledge of BIM processes would be an advantage. Job Description

Research Engineer (3-4 years’ experience)

Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) has experienced a significant increase in our Research & Development
(R&D) sector in recent years, particularly in the area of transport infrastructure management and the risk due
to natural hazards, including climate change impacts. These projects typically involve developing novel
solutions to quantify the risk based on reliable hazard and consequence predictions, and by employing
probabilistic risk assessment methodologies. To address the increased workload in our R&D sector, we are
therefore currently looking for a Research Engineer to support these activities. This role will report to our Head
of R&D and will be based at either our Dublin or Cork office.
 

Role Description

As a Research Engineer, you will primarily be office-based, developing quantitative
solutions to assess the risk to civil infrastructure, including earthworks, bridges, tunnels, etc. This will involve
the use of Matlab and GIS software, technical report writing, as well as client and stakeholder engagement.
The role will also involve project management activities for a range of ongoing R&D projects, including
technical and financial reporting to national and international funding agencies.
 

The key responsibilities of the role will include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Performing reliability-based / probabilistic assessments of transport infrastructure assets, including
  • earthworks and structures;
  • GIS mapping and analysis;
  • Project management and project administration;
  • Technical reporting writing;
  • Stakeholder engagement and use of presentation skills.
     

Expertise Required
GDG is looking for a suitable candidate with prior research experience in relation to risk assessment for civil
engineering structures. The ideal candidate will hold a technical background within civil engineering, preferably
having completed a PhD, but candidates who have completed a Masters in a civil engineering subject will also
be considered.

In addition, the ideal candidate shall have:

  • Experience in Matlab software and GIS software packages (e.g. ArcGIS);
  • A demonstrated ability in reliability analysis / probabilistic risk assessment for engineering structures;
  • A good understanding of geotechnical engineering, including soil-structure interaction;
  • Experience in effective project management;
  • A demonstrated ability in technical report writing, preferably with a number of scientific publications;
  • Experience in the administration of research projects, preferably with previous experience of Europeanfunded research projects;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.

Senior Engineer/Consultant (10 years’ experience) 

– Transport Infrastructure Risk Analysis Services

Overview: GDG are looking for a Senior Engineer / Consultant to take on a leading role on developing our business in network risk management for the transport infrastructure sector. This role will require a good understanding of transport infrastructure networks, how they are structured, how they operate and how they manage their assets on an ongoing basis. The role will involve asset management and risk modelling.

Over the past 5 years, GDG have developed core expertise in risk analysis of earthwork assets for the transport sector, with a particular strong emphasis on railway networks. This has culminated in the development of a specific Decision Support Tool for Irish Rail (the national railway owner/operator in Ireland). GDG now aim to develop, market and sell this expertise on a global basis through a number of discrete market channels. GDG are looking for a senior engineer/consultant to come on board to lead this development process. As such, the ideal candidate will have a combined commercial and technical background, with experience of civil engineering research deemed to be a strong plus.

GDG have already initiated this development process by securing Phase 1 of an EC backed funding scheme. The successful candidate for this position will be tasked with building on the Phase 1 funding and securing the next round (Phase 2) under the EC “SME INSTRUMENT” scheme. Following the successful funding round, this role will evolve into the Project Management and delivery of the growing Decision Support and Risk Analysis sector. It is anticipated that the successful candidate would take the lead in the proposal stage and the project delivery stage.

The ideal candidate will be from a civil engineering background or a commercial background in the transport sector. Experience of major infrastructure projects would be deemed beneficial. Significant client interaction with infrastructure owners/operators will be a key aspect of the proposed position. This role will require a dynamic, flexible and driven individual who will commit to the project and drive this aspect of the business forward. A degree of independent working will be required and therefore the ideal candidate shall be comfortable in taking both technical and commercial responsibility.

This role will involve a combination of activities including: research proposal writing, project management, technical management, team development, commercial coordination, business development, etc. This role will require the successful candidate to work closely with other members of the research team as well as mentor more junior staff. While the primary focus of the role is on developing the service sector surrounding transport infrastructure risk analysis services, there will also be a secondary requirement to provide ad-hoc support to the wider technical team in Dublin.

This role will initially report to the Head of Research and be based in Dublin. Following successfully securing the Phase 2 funding this role will report to the Managing Director.

Required Qualifications/Experience:

  • PhD or MSc through research in Engineering or a Relevant Science subject;
  • Experience of Major Infrastructure Projects;
  • Bid Management / Tender Preparation / Research Proposal Writing is essential ;
  • Experience of Leading a Team of up 10 members of staff (commercial and technical);
  • Previous Exposure to Software Development / Software Architecture ;
  • Experience of Contract Documents;
  • Technical Development Experience (preferably in a service based / engineering / software industry) ;
  • Experience of Business Development, Establishing Strategic Partnerships and Promoting new services to international clients;
  • Appreciation of Transport Infrastructure Asset Management and Maintenance Procedures;
  • Full Clean Drivers Licence;

Desirable:

  • Experience of European Frameworks Programme (FP7, H2020, Etc.)
  • Experience of Research Proposal Writing ;
  • Experience of Risk Analysis / Probabilistic Modelling ;
  • Some Asset Management experience would be beneficial ;
  • Software Capabilities (Matlab, Python, Etc.) ;
  • IP Management Experience ;
  • Passion for Emerging Technologies
