GDG would like to congratulate Mark Coughlan, GDG Principal Geoscientist and iCRAG researcher, on the publication of an impressive paper on the stratigraphy of the Irish Sea. This study utilizes a combination of publically available geophysical seismic data (gathered as part of the INFOMAR programme) and geotechnical information to develop a ground model of the Quaternary geology in the North Irish Sea.

Scour is a critical issue that can have devastating impacts on bridges, occasionally leading to complete collapse - Therefore accurate identification of scour development is essential for the safe management of bridge assets. This is a topic that the research team at GDG have been investigating for several years with a view to implementing efficient predictive monitoring regimes that not only identify the presence of scour but also measure the impact the scour is having on the structural performance.

GDG’s Managing Director Paul Doherty and Senior Engineer John O’Donovan have had their article titled ‘Numerical Modelling in Geotechnical Engineering’ published as a feature article in Deep Foundations Magazine. This magazine is published by the Deep Foundations Institute. The article discusses advances in finite element modelling of geotechnical materials and the proliferation in the use of numerical models to analyse engineering problems. Although this is generally to be welcomed the article outlines some potential pitfalls that are common in numerical analysis. Finally, a number of case studies are discussed that illustrate how the combined use of engineering judgement with computer models leads to robust and efficient design solutions.
