Dinish Wharf Ireland’s fishing industry is to gain a new €23.5m, 216m-long quay development on completion of works on Dinish Island, Castletownbere in Co Cork. Working with Keating Construction, we are helping to deliver an additional 216m of landing berth, 0.9 hectares of high capacity reclaimed quay storage area, two new breakwater structures at the entrance to the harbour, the navigation channel dredged to -6.5mCD and a berthing pocket dredged to -8.0mCD to further facilitate landings by vessels up to 100m length overall.

GDG are leading an EU-funded project to evaluate the potential deep geothermal resources in two European urban areas. The GEO-URBAN project team met earlier this week in Dublin City Hall to discuss the preliminary results of the multi-disciplinary geophysical surveys that are ongoing in Dublin city and Vallès, Catalonia, Spain. The aim of the project is to improve the understanding of subsurface geological structures and establish a commercial roadmap for the use of geothermal energy as a renewable energy source for homes and businesses in these urban areas.

GDG would like to congratulate Mark Coughlan, GDG Principal Geoscientist and iCRAG researcher, on the publication of an impressive paper on the stratigraphy of the Irish Sea. This study utilizes a combination of publically available geophysical seismic data (gathered as part of the INFOMAR programme) and geotechnical information to develop a ground model of the Quaternary geology in the North Irish Sea.
