Research Engineer (3-4 years of experience)
Research Engineer (3-4 years’ experience)
Are you a Civil Engineer with research experience relating to risk assessment for civil engineering structures?
Are you motivated by challenging R&D projects and developing innovative solutions? Do you want to be part
of a dynamic team with specialist civil engineering expertise and a significant track record in R&D projects? If
these questions get you thinking, then you may be the right candidate for this exciting job opportunity.
Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) has experienced a significant increase in our Research & Development
(R&D) sector in recent years, particularly in the area of transport infrastructure management and the risk due
to natural hazards, including climate change impacts. These projects typically involve developing novel
solutions to quantify the risk based on reliable hazard and consequence predictions, and by employing
probabilistic risk assessment methodologies. To address the increased workload in our R&D sector, we are
therefore currently looking for a Research Engineer to support these activities. This role will report to our Head
of R&D and will be based at either our Dublin or Cork office.
As a Research Engineer, you will primarily be office-based, developing quantitative
solutions to assess the risk to civil infrastructure, including earthworks, bridges, tunnels, etc. This will involve
the use of Matlab and GIS software, technical report writing, as well as client and stakeholder engagement.
The role will also involve project management activities for a range of ongoing R&D projects, including
technical and financial reporting to national and international funding agencies.
The key responsibilities of the role will include (but are not limited to) the following:
Performing reliability-based / probabilistic assessments of transport infrastructure assets, including
earthworks and structures;
GIS mapping and analysis;
Project management and project administration;
Technical reporting writing;
Stakeholder engagement and use of presentation skills.
GDG is looking for a suitable candidate with prior research experience in relation to risk assessment for civil
engineering structures. The ideal candidate will hold a technical background within civil engineering, preferably
having completed a PhD, but candidates who have completed a Masters in a civil engineering subject will also
In addition, the ideal candidate shall have:
- Experience in Matlab software and GIS software packages (e.g. ArcGIS);
- A demonstrated ability in reliability analysis / probabilistic risk assessment for engineering structures;
- A good understanding of geotechnical engineering, including soil-structure interaction;
- Experience in effective project management;
- A demonstrated ability in technical report writing, preferably with a number of scientific publications;
- Experience in the administration of research projects, preferably with previous experience of Europeanfunded research projects;
- Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
Candidates should also be highly organised and motivated individuals with effective communication skills, a
good work ethic, and a commitment to technical excellence, personal efficiency, and career progression
through Continued Professional Development.
