Head of Research and Innovation

Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) are seeking to hire a suitable candidate to lead their Research and Development (R&D) sector. GDG is actively engaged in nationally- and internationally-funded research projects across a range of topics including offshore renewables, infrastructure asset management, risk based decision making, geohazards and geothermal energy. The company has forged many collaborations with leading universities, research organisations and other industry partners from across Europe. GDG’s newly appointed Head of Research & Innovation will be responsible for the company’s R&D activities, ensuring a pipeline of R&D activities that support the company objective of providing innovative engineering solutions in the core sections of infrastructure, offshore & marine, and renewables.

The ideal candidate will have an engineering background (offshore, civil engineering, geology or geoscience background) and have experience of a research environment, either as a postgraduate researcher or as a member of a research-performing organisation. This role will involve a combination of activities including: developing the research strategy for GDG ; applying for funding proposals, project management of ongoing research activities; delivery of technical research tasks; development of new research ideas, and writing of new research proposals; reviewing deliverables from partner organisations; attending research meetings/workshops; establishing research collaborations with other organisations. This role is responsible for the management, administration, and leadership of research at GDG and is instrumental in promoting, formalizing and embedding successful innovation throughout the company, requiring the successful candidate to work closely with other members of the research and other GDG teams.

Role Description:

As Head of Research & Innovation, you will primarily be office-based, conducting a range of activities including the following:

Identification of research funding sources and opportunities;
Development of new research collaborations and expansion of existing research collaborations with universities, research organisations and other industry partners across Europe;
Research proposal coordination and writing;
Project management duties, including technical and financial reporting to national and international funding agencies;
Client and stakeholder engagement, as well as the development of new research ideas, collaborations and research proposals;
Identification of national and international support schemes for business innovations;
Create, implement and control the innovation strategy;
Define and prioritize key innovation projects;
Ensure to interpret business strategy and determine innovative solutions supporting strategy implementation;
Design and model solutions for customer innovation and experience along with similar initiatives variants;
Establish and Chair Innovation development group (Cross Departmental) to conduct insights as well as design outputs to their work, driving integrated Innovation development;
Coordinate all cross-functional activities, represent customers internally and collaborate with leaders in varied areas on allocation across projects and resource planning;
Develop high-performance atmosphere;
Perform as strategic partner to head innovation of influence change and new processes;
Lead and direct different cross-functional programs and projects of varied sizes and types concurrently;
Contribute and influence strategic direction for senior leadership using informal and formal communication;
Oversee key projects, processes and performance reports, data and analysis;
Design, research, develop, analyse and suggest new market concepts as well as strategies.
Manage a team of research staff.

Some national and international travel may be required as part of the role.

Required Qualifications / Experience:

  • PhD / Masters in a relevant discipline;
  • Experience in the administration of research projects, preferably with previous experience of European-funded research projects;
  • A demonstrated ability in technical report writing, preferably with a number of scientific publications;
  • Experience in effective project management;
  • Previous experience of research proposal writing;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English; 
  • Experience in programming, as well as GIS software packages (e.g. ArcGIS);
  • Experience of collaborative research projects;
  • Full clean drivers licence.
